Top Seven Final Prom Songs (For the Class of ‘07)

Friday, April 27th, 2007

We had our prom last weekend, and more proms are coming up fast all around the country, so I figured this would be a good time to put my Top 7 picks for Best Prom Music to finish Prom with. And, yes, this is going to get dangerously cheesy. I’m a sucker for slow songs.

Number 7

Here’s To The Night - Eve 6

Here’s to the nights we felt alive
Here’s to the tears you knew you’d cry
Here’s to goodbye
Tomorrow’s gonna come too soon

Number 6

Truly, Madly, Deeply - Savage Garden

I want to stand with you on a mountain.
I want to bathe with you in the sea.
I want to lay like this forever.
Until the sky falls down on me…

Number 5

Good Riddance - Green Day

“It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right.
I hope you had the time of your life.

So take the photographs, and still frames in your mind
Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time.”

Number 4

Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd

If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
‘Cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn’t be the same.
‘Cause I’m as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can’t change.

Number 3

Amazed - Lonestar

I don’t know how you do what you do
I’m so in love with you
It just keeps getting better
I want to spend the rest of my life
With you by my side
Forever and ever
Every little thing that you do
Baby, I’m amazed by you

Number 2

Wonderful Tonight - Eric Clapton

I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes.
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don’t realize how much I love you.

Number 1

I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing - Aerosmith

I don’t wanna close my eyes
I don’t wanna fall asleep
‘Cause I’d miss you, babe
And I don’t wanna miss a thing
‘Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream will never do
I’d still miss you, babe
And I don’t wanna miss a thing

You know you’re crying.

Motion City Soundtrack

Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Cause I hate the ocean, theme parks and airplanes,
Talking with strangers, waiting in line..
I’m through with these pills that make me sit still.
“Are you feeling fine?”
Yes, I feel just fine.

Everything Is Alright

I like the universe, but she messes with my words
I’m not talking planets or galaxies and the distance just makes it worse.
I know what you’re thinking, this probably sounds rehearsed.

L.G. FUAD

They carved a message deep within our broken hearts that failed to mend:
Make out kids never had a chance to be best friends.

Hold Me Down

Motion City Soundtrack, one of the few bands with an almost entirely unique sound that still sounds good to almost everybody. I’ve always admired them for taking their music in a different direction than everyone else. Because very few bands sound like Motion City Soundtrack. Very few.

Boulevard of Broken Songs, Every Car You Chase

Green Day vs. Travis vs. Oasis vs. Aerosmith vs. Eminem

Boulevard of Broken Songs

Love this mix!

“The mix consisted of elements from Green Day’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Oasis’ “Wonderwall”, Travis’ “Writing to Reach You” and Eminem’s “Sing for the Moment” which itself samples Aerosmith’s “Dream On”.” - Boulevard of Broken Songs, Wikipedia

And while we’re on the subject of mixes…

Death Cab For Cutie Videos

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Death Cab For Cutie completely won me over with “Plans”. I don’t know that I’ve ever heard a more perfect album. I’ve learned to sing and play many of them on guitar, and I will never grow tired of listening to any of the songs from Plans. Here are some of the great videos that Death Cab has produced from their latest album.

Follow You Into The Dark

OMG flying musical notes!!! Love the Soul Meets Body video.

Soul Meets Body

Summer Skin

Summer Skin is… incredible. Let me know what you think!

Jethro Tull Playing Bouree with Orchestra

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

This man, Ian Anderson, is my hero. For making flute a rock instrument, I award him 49 cool points. For turning Bouree by Bach into a piece of “loathsome cocktail lounge jazz” I award him 32 cool points. And for screaming into his flute near the end of the piece, I award him 25 cool points, putting Mr. Anderson at a nice even 106 points on my cool chart.

Foreign Friday!

Friday, April 20th, 2007

Today, I came across several European songs that rocked my American world, so here we go!

Boten Anna by Basshunter. I came across this by typing “lol” into YouTube, and looking through the whole lot. I came across a not-even-amusing fan music video, but the song! The song!!!

Boten Anna

Pretty much just following an electronic paper trail, I took some advice from a comment on the Boten Anna video and searched “jan smit laura” having no idea what to expect. Turned out to be a pretty cool song about “Laura”. Fitting in my case, but don’t ask me about it.

Laura

Heading in a completely different direction, here’s uhh “レミオロメン - è›?”. Awesome music, and music video.

This Week’s Offerings

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Well, let’s see what YouTube has to offer in the Music Video department this week.

*rummages*

Okay, here’s one for you. Avril Lavigne performing her latest single “Girlfriend” on SNL.

Honestly, it was a terrible performance, but not entirely Avril’s fault. Firstly, those background singers were horrendous. Then the hand motions, seriously, someone needs to be smacked for those. And was it just me, or did Avril look a bit… bored.

Girlfriend

Whatever.

Next up, we’ve got an incredible video by Feist, “1-2-3-4″. Apparently shot all in one continuous scene, the whole dance is really nifty. The flashy dress is straight out of the 90’s though. And that frightens me. A lot.

1-2-3-4

It’s been a while since I last posted up a rap video to not make fun of it. In fact, I don’t know that I ever have, in which case, notify the press, this is a momentous occasion.

Pretty Ricky’s “Push It Baby” music video is actually… original. Well filmed. Has an interesting set, characters, costumes. Oh, man, the costumes are awesome. The music isn’t much different than anything on the radio, but the video is definitely worth watching.

(I Wanna See You) Push It Baby feat. Sean Paul

Okay, so do you really want some entertainment? I mean really, really, really good entertainment? You gotta be prepared for this. Maybe you should sit down.

The Flaming Lips are coming out with a DVD from their Legendary Concert in Oklahoma City. “UFO’s at the Zoo”.

Check this trailer and weep with joy,

Spiderman 3

Wednesday, April 18th, 2007

Spiderman 3 approaches, and I can’t wait. Spiderman is the only set of super hero movies I will admit that I enjoy. I really do totally dig them. And I have a thing for Kirsten Dunst. Her acting is superb.

Anyway, here is a kick ass trailer for the movie.

The soundtrack is gonna rock! Featuring artists like The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, Snow Patrol, and The Flaming Lips, I think I might just have to pick it up.

Here’s Snow Patrol’s latest video, that revolves around Spiderman 3. w00t! I love it, it’s awesome.

16 April 2007 - In Memory

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

In memory of the victims and their friends and families of the horrible events yesterday, for lost lives, chances, and opportunities. May angels lead you in.:

Mika - Grace Kelly and More!

Monday, April 16th, 2007

A guy walks into a bar and sits down to get a drink. At the other end is a pirate with a steering wheel on his crotch. The guy tries not to stare, but after a few drinks he is emboldened enough to go talk to the pirate. He asks the pirate, ‘Did you know that you have a steering wheel on your crotch?’ ‘Aye’ the pirate replies, ‘It’s driving me nuts.’

Sorry, I had to get that joke out of the system. Anyway…

Apparently there is this singer called Mika who is BIG in the UK. I can certainly see why his single “Grace Kelly” made #1 on their charts in January earlier this year. It’s just so freakin’ catchy!

Grace Kelly

Something that amazes me is how good he sounds live! Some bands like this are completely studio bands and shouldn’t be allowed on the stage unless it’s to set-up for a better band. But Mika sounds just as good, if not better than the recorded versions live!

Check Out Jennifer Aniston

Friday, April 13th, 2007

Well, if you hadn’t noticed, one of my colleagues is doing an amazing job in one of the celebrity blogs in the 451 Network. Erin at Jennifer Aniston Watch. Check that S*** out! (starred word = site)

Of particular interest to this blog is Jennifer’s particulars in the world of music. Here you’ll find a Melissa Etheridge video that she did, plus a lot more information about it than I ever knew there was about her.

Barenaked Ladies - The Bathroom Sessions

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

Oh man, I just fell in love with the Barenaked Ladies all over again. I’ve loved their music since I first heard it waaay back in the day, when I found huge amounts of enjoyment in their name alone. Today, I’m more selective about my music and which puns I find amusing, but all the same, BNL remains one of my favorite bands.

Recently they’ve been putting “Bathroom Sessions” on YouTube. These all-acoustic versions of songs from many of their albums often feature added parts or verses. Sometimes they even sound better than the recorded version. Here are some of my favorites from the ones I’ve heard so far.

Linkin Park - What They’ve Done

Wednesday, April 11th, 2007

Here is “What I’ve Done”, Linkin Park’s newest single and music video. It’d definitely different, but I’ll have to hear a lot more of the new album to make up my mind about their new direction for their music. They are trying to shy away from the rock-rap and focus more on rock. They have Fort Minor as an outlet for the rap now.

99 Luftballons / 99 Red Balloons

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

This last week I finally really sat down and listened to these songs. Now I’m a little bit addicted. The original by Nena was written in lieu of the Cold War. 80’s Music Lyrics explains the original German Lyrics:

While lighthearted and playful in tone, the song is ultimately one of cold war tension; a war begins when trigger happy generals send planes to intercept a mass of unidentifed objects (balloons) just above the horizon. The conflict escalates as everyone wants a piece of the action, and by the end of the song there is nothing left… no fighters, no balloons, just a world in ruins.

Here’s the original:

And the cover performed by Goldfinger, featured in several movies, Eurotrip most recently:
