Dolly’s Imagination

Monday, May 25th, 2009

dollySometimes, even the stars of another genre can make a big difference …

For example, country legend Dolly Parton has teamed up with the United Way of America to double the number of books their program provides at the moment.

Dolly started the Imagination Library in 1996 as part of her Dollywood Foundation, and you’ll find it in 566 counties across 36 Smerican states, as well as in Canada and the UK.

It all came from a simple idea: build an organization that sends one book per month to children from the time of their birth until they enter kindergarten.

childrensbooksThe Tennessee songbird states, “This program is one of the most important ways I know to improve the educational opportunities for children. When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer. The seeds of these dreams are often found in books, and the seeds you plant in your community can grow across the world.”

The new partnership has set a goal of providing free books to one million children each month by 2014.

Def Leppard Tapped for CMA AWARD?

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Now, this is weird:

The legendary hard rockers Def Leppard have been nominated for three (yeah, three!!) Country Music Television (CMT) awards!

Seems their duet with country teen idol Taylor Swift on the song Photograph has been nominated for both CMT Performance Of The Year and Wide Open Country Video Of The Year (????)

But they also have a second nod in the Wide Open Country Video Of The Year category for their work with Tim McGraw on their song Nine Lives.
Robert Plant
and Alison Krauss are also among the nominees, which is more understandable.

In other news, the rock band Slayer is said to be a bit upset that their collaborations with Emmylou Harris (Honky Tonk Antichrist), Kenny Loggins (Hillbilly Awaits) and Willie Nelson (At Dawn They Sleep On The Front Porch) didn’t make it.

Personally, I don’t get it.  I mean, just because you’ve got a country star on a rock song doesn’t mean it’s country!  Remember that song on the C&W charts awhile back?  Bigger Than The Beatles?  Just because Diffie used a sampling of the Fab Four’s She Loves You didn’t make it fodder for the rock charts.
Something verrrry strange is happenin’ in Nashville, people …
