Some “older” songs, that I’ve recently rediscovered. By older I mean anything that I haven’t heard in more than about a year, so all of you old people don’t get all offended if some of these are relatively new. I’m not going to label these because really none of them need it.

Forgotten: Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet

For people who don’t recognise this band when I mention their name, all I need do is begin humming the refrain from their huge 1993 hit ‘Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm’ (which goes, er, ‘Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm’…) and their eyes light up, they smile, and they shout, “Man I hate that song!” And I nod, and smile, because I too hate that song. It tied up the charts for weeks, and the radio for months.

However the album it is from - God Shuffled His Feet - is, in my opinion, one of the great, ignored LPs from the 1990’s. From the first song, the songwriting and performances on this album are fantastic.

Listen to ‘Afternoons and Coffeespoons’, or ‘Swimming In Your Ocean’ (which is simply beautiful) for a taste of what a great, underrated band the Crash Test Dummies were and remain.

Sure, their lyrics are a little kookie - listen to ‘How Does a Duck Know?’ for example - but the songs are invested with such happy quirkiness (and a disturbing strain of melancholy) that the whole album melts into a wee blob of perfection.

You can probably pick this one up from eBay (like I did) for a few bucks, or but it online from the Dummies’ official website.
