Resolution Defeated??

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Hey … remember a few days back, when Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex., and no relation that I know of) introed a House Resolution in Congress to honor Michael Jackson?
At the memorial service, she showed the plaque and received a resounding standing ovation for her effort.

Well, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, it ain’t gonna happen.

The wide-eyed wonder of the House said that debate on the symbolic measure could raise “contrary views” about the pop star’s life.

Lawmakers are free to use House speeches “to express their sympathy or their praise any time that they wish,” she said. “I don’t think it’s necessary for us to have a resolution. A resolution, I think, would open up to contrary views … that are not necessary at this time to be expressed in association with a resolution whose purpose is quite different.”

Of course, you’ve got racist jerks like “Rep.” Peter King (Representative?? of what?? Of who?? Whatever he “represents”, I don’t wanna part of it …) who says he’ll “fight” the measure (Yoooo-hoooo … Mr. Rep. Kinnnnnnnnk? Didja happen, like, to read it’s, ummm, not gonna be presented?? Or aren’t ya listeninno,Ithoughtnot …)

Fortunately, Rep. Lee is going to try and re-introduce it again soon (sheesh! Come on, guys and gals … it’s not a law we’re talkin’ about here!! What’s the problem??).

Let’s hope she succeeds this time (reckon we oughtta write/call/see our own Congresspeople and push for it?? Whaddya think, yardbirds??).

Michael’s Earth Song

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

If there’s any video that Michael Jackson left us that we actually NEED to watch, I believe it’s to his Earth Song (from his HISTORY CD).
Man, see if this doesn’t hit ya right in the heart:

‘Nuff said, right?

Rock Band: Beatles to Debut

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009

a-hard-days-nightA very special edition of Rock Band is gonna be debuting on 9/9/09 in the form of The Beatles (incidentally, 9 was John Lennon’s favorite number.

Of course, everyone’s excited about the new edition. Even Sir Macca himself is eager for its release (considering his background screens during his Coachella appearance was pretty much a commercial for it)!

It’s billed as a “first-of-its-kind music-based video game offers a revolutionary tour of The Beatles’ music, career, and legacy.”
September 9, btw, is also the date the Beatles’ entire discography is released in digitally remastered format.

The game will have 45 songs, with these verified so far:

“I Saw Her Standing There”
“I Want To Hold Your Hand”
“I Feel Fine”
“Taxman”
“Day Tripper”
“Back In The USSR”
“I Am The Walrus”
“Octopus’s Garden”
“Here Comes The Sun”
“Get Back”

And dig this: they’re promising all of the Abbey Road album for future download purchase, as well as others from the discography!

flashing_fHITTING #1

This past weekend, the popular UK band THE FORE hit the #1 spot on the Unsigned Chart show — for the second time!
And now they’re goin’ for the gold at Overplay, where their hit You’ll Be Mine is already #4 this week on the main charts, #2 on the pop charts (remember, they’ve got a lot of competition for the position!).
Now, just as you helped them get the top spot on Unsigned, you can do the same at Overplay!
Just click this link (it takes you to the chart where you can play the hit) and give You’ll Be Mine a listen! With each click, the lads get closer to #1! (Oh … did I mention it’s also a free download?)
And, on behalf of Spencer, Matt, Si and Nathan, thanks for your helping the band get to the top at Unsigned! You all are amazing!

Skynyrd’s Back!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

GREAT NEWS for all Lynyrd Skynyrd fans (and who isn’t one??):
They’ve just completed a new album, which’ll be called God & Guns — and it’ll be released (mark yer calendars!) on September 29.

The album will have thirteen tracks – each one stamped with the band’s unmistakable, classic sound.
It was recorded in Nashville with producer Bob Marlette (who worked with Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne).

I’ll tell ya now that the first single is gonna be a powerful and very appropriate one, given the recent passings of Billy and Ean. Still Unbroken is due in July, at the same time as its new video, which the band will shoot in Nashville next month.

God & Guns will be Skynyrd’s first new studio material in six years!
But, until the album comes out, you can still catch them on their UK tour beginning Wednesday (May 27). They’ll also be working the Rock Rebels Tour this summer along with (who else?) Kid Rock!

CAROLINA ON MY MIND

Y’know, being from North Carolina (originally) has its perks: I can tell — no, guarantee you — that some of the most beautiful seaside property in the world is in our Outer Banks (you’ve probably seen the vanity license plates with the “OBX” sign on them! Hey … that’s us!).

And if you’re looking for a great vacation home (and, with summer approaching, it’s about time to start, right?), why not visit the folks who not only have the best rentals in the area, but also a great blog on the OBX, the best recommendations anywhere, and so much more?
Believe me, you’re headin’ into the perfect vacation by going to the Outer Banks via the link you just passed.

Twenty Acorns Tied In A Sack

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

ono_lennon“Caught the early plane back to London/Fifty acorns tied in a sack/The men from the press said, ‘We wish you success, it’s good to have the both of you back’”

You remember the words from “The Beatles’” Ballad Of John and Yoko (I put the Fab Four’s name in quotes because only John and Paul played on the recording). It referred to the Acorn Peace effort that Yoko Ono and husband John Lennon made in 1969.
Though John’s been gone from us for nearly 29 years, Yoko will recreate the promotion to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

She’ll send acorns to 123 world leaders – including President Obama – urging them to strive for world peace. Each world leader will receive two acorns in a transparent box with the inscription “Acorn Peace by John And Yoko, Spring 2009″.

Here’s how it all started:
“On 15 June 1968, John Lennon and Yoko Ono planted two acorns for peace at Coventry Cathedral. The acorns were planted in east and westerly positions, symbolizing the meeting of the couple and the union of their two cultures. This was the first of many peace events that the couple would initiate throughout their lives. They followed the planting by sending acorns to world leaders in the hope that they would plant oak trees in their gardens”.

If there’s anything that the couple taught us, it’s that peace begets peace. In other words, you can fight, you can scream, in the hope that it accomplished your dream; but the only way to make them understand is to reach out and take them by the hand.
For the peace is there for all of us to share; it’s fragile and it’s agile and too delicate to scare. So put away your guns and killing other’s loved ones … and reach out your unarmed hand … in love … in understanding … in peace*.

From A Peace-meal Song, composed and performed by this writer in 1968.

iPhone, YOURphone

Seems like everybody’s catching the “iPhone” craze these days — and for good reason: They’re powerful, accessible, web-compatible and portable!
But, if you have one, you know that accessories are just important as the phone itself. Now, while most areas have stores that sell those, you know it can (a) take forever to get a salesperson that’ll help you, (b) cost you a bundle for whatever you’re buying, and (c) offer no guarantee that it’s gonna work on your phone!
Want a better way to shop for those accessories … and at a more wallet-smiling price? It’s simple:
Just click this link that’ll take you to the best, most reliable and affordable in iphone accessories.
You’ll be glad you made the choice, believe me!

Now … all that bein’ said, I’ll see ya on the flip side …

Beatles’ Building Up For Grabs

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Listen … before we go on with this particular post, remember that it’s the 50th anniversary of the plane crash that took Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper from us. To read more about it, click here.

Now, if you’re lookin’ for some prime office space, ya might wanna check out a cool location in London. But it’s not any building …

Y’see, the five-story structure (located at 3 Savile Row, in case you wanna take a look-see) is where The Beatles headquartered their Apple Corps in the late ’60s. In fact, the band bought it for an easy £500,000.
And on January 30, 1969, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr played a very famous performance on its rooftop! They’d been recording their final album, Let It Be, in the basement studio, before staging their first live performance for nearly three years (it was also their absolute last).

But it has even more history: It was constructed in 1735, and was once bought by Lord Horatio Nelson for his mistress Lady Hamilton.
Owners Kier Property plan to sell it for office space but they believe the Beatles connection will send the value up quite a bit.

Leigh Thomas, Kier’s associate director, said: “It’s being marketed internationally. If someone wants a bit of heritage with a bit of history of the band, then this is the place. I still get goose bumps in here. It’s the world’s biggest piece of memorabilia!”

HERE’S THE GIG THAT MADE THAT ROOFTOP FAMOUS:

So that’s it for now … but stay tuned: there’s more in 24!

A Necessary Re-Introduction …

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

rock_and_roll-thumbOkay … from the email I’ve gotten so far, I reckon a re-introduction’s in order …

Since I can’t figure out how to change that furshlugginer “About” section (awww, c’mon … the only “computer whiz” around the office is that gunk left when the cat jumps on the keyboard and … well, “whizzes” on it …), I reckon it’s time to give the 411 here, in the post itself:

I’m called The Rock Relic, and the rock-music biz has been my life for over thirty years now.  Been a rock DJ, performer, producer, now a rock writer/researcher and promoter.  From Aerosmith and Animals to ZZ Top and Zombies, I’ve covered ‘em all at one time or another (and met many of the top dawgs of music, past and present).

The posts here are gonna be a bit longer, with more for yer hard-earned dollar.  You’ll have more info you can jawjack about later, and updates on yer fave stars — classic and new!

rahReviews?  Natch!  Matter of fact, we’ve already started with a rundown of The Fore’s new Run and Hide.
Vids?  Where ya been?? Lucky readers have already seen Jim Morrison as a schoolkid, Twisted Sister, Motorhead … and Jimmy Page at 16!

And, listen … if ya haven’t caught on yet, the RR writes like we’d be talkin’ on the street or in yer living room or somethin’ (without the TV on).  We liven it up here from now on, ’cause, after all, ROCK IS A LIVIN’ THING, RIGHT?!? (Say “amen,” bruthahs an’ sis-tuhhhs …)

So keep on tunin’ in … and tell yer friends about the site while you’re at it, alright? We’re gonna be turnin’ everything up a notch or two … so be ready …

And I’ll see ya on the flip side …

Guitar Signed by the Dead?

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Fans of The Grateful Dead (right … the Deadheads) will wanna get their hands on thisguitar (it’s up for auction right now!).

Y’see, the surviving members of the band – now known simply as The Dead and recently reunited – have signed the guitar to benefit HeadCount, an org that encourages young people to vote.

Established in 2004 by a group of artists, industry professionals and fans, the organization has registered over 200,000 new voters. Over 12,000 of these signed up at Dave Matthews Band concerts a little more than four years ago.

It has street teams (regular, everyday folk who wanna get the word out in almost 50 cities, and a number of well-known artists are involved with HeadCount, including Pearl Jam, Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Nine Inch Nails, My Morning Jacket, Maroon 5, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, The Indigo Girls, Gov’t Mule and the Disco Biscuits.

Joining The Dead – Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes, and Mickey Hart – in signing the guitar are Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, President Barack Obama’s transition team Co-Chair (and former White House Chief of Staff) John Podesta, and FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adlestein.

Could you dig rockin’ with this thing? Well, the auction runs until February 11 and you can find out more about it here.

HERE’S THE DEAD DOING TIME IN THE GROOVE:

Okay … that’s all for now, but … stay tuned, ’cause there’s more to come in 24 or less!

Motӧrhead Revs Up For Tour

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Lemmy Kilmester and his famed heavy-metal trio, Motörhead, is planning a solid tour of the UK this fall!

The band, which was formed almost 34 years ago by the self-proclaimed “gigolo” (you oughtta hear him brag about his … er, “ladies”. Yeah. Sick …), do show an appreciation for early rock in a few of their cover songs — but they’re better noted for original material that covers such topics as war, the battle between good and evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and even their life as rock stars.

Considered one of the most popular of the English “heavy” bands (if you’re a statesider and watched VH1’s recent 50 Top Metal Acts countdown, you’ll know that!), they’ve scheduled a full UK tour for November. So, if you’re in England, here are the venues:

Nov. 11 - Plymouth Pavillion
Nov. 12 - Bristol Colston Hall
Nov. 13 - Newport Centre
Nov. 15 - Swindon Oasis
Nov. 16 - Nottingham Royal Concert Hall
Nov. 17 - Newcastle City Hall
Nov. 19 - Glasgow Academy
Nov. 20 - Leeds Academy
Nov. 21 - Manchester Apollo
Nov. 23 - Cambridge Corn Exchange
Nov. 24 - Southend Cliffs Pavilion
Nov. 25 - Portsmouth Guildhall
Nov. 27 - Bournemouth Solent Hall
Nov. 28 - London Hammersmith Apollo
Nov. 29 - Wolverhampton Civic Hall

Now, I’ve already been asked about their logo.  It’s called Snaggletooth, and was created in 1977 by artist Joe Petagno.

Here’s one of their most famous songs — Ace Of Spades:

Okay … stay tuned, ’cause I’ll have more in 24! ‘Til then, I’ll see ya on the flip side!

Music Sales 2008 — Upside/Downside

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Well, the final Nielsen SoundScan results of music sales last year are in, and it shows that all sales of recorded music (including CDs, .mp3s and vinyl records) went down in 2008. Now, the digital downloads were up (well, we do have the internet!), but it wasn’t enough to counter declining CD sales.

But even the digital sales have a catch to ‘em: a lot of people are downloading single songs instead of albums, so the record companies don’t have as big a profit margin. Atlantic Records, though, proved to be the exception: Three months ago, it reported that its return from digital sales surpassed CD sales.

Now, get this: Know what showed the most sales in seventeen years? Long-playing vinyl records, with almost 2-million new ones sold in the 08! (Man, I told readers years ago that these babies would make a comeback!!)

And here’s another bright spot: recorded music sales during the last week of the year reached 65,000,000, the biggest week in SoundScan history!

So it looks like ‘09 is off to a pretty good start …

UNLOCKING THE DOORS

While Manzarek & Co. are tryin’ to “keep the Doors open” with shows featuring him, Krieger and Dinsmore, I thought I’d end this one with a look back … wayyyyy back … to an interview done with Jim Morrison back in 1964 (he was still a college student at FSU then):

Well, that’s it for this edition.  But stay tuned … there’s more in 24!!
And tell yer friends while you’re at it, okay??  Shoot … we’re just gettin’ started …

Duos, Past and Present

Friday, January 16th, 2009

“DUO” IDENTITIES

Okay … off the beaten track for a moment:
Over the past fifty-plus years of rock music, there’ve been a lot of twosomes who’ve recorded and gigged with varied degrees of success.  Sometimes, these were individual performers in their own rights, put together in studios to record tracks then put on-the-road to promote their work.

But … who is (or was) the best? Who is (or was) the worst??

A year ago (give or take a few days … okay, maybe weeks …), I asked this of my readers on another blog.  Here’s what they had to say (hey … don’t push!! You’ll get yer chance to vote at the end of the post … ):

THE EVERLY BROTHERS came in, by far, as the best. A mix of the purest of harmony, some great material (one even wrote by Paul McCartney), and they were actually brothers: Don, born in the little town of Brownie, Kentucky, and Phil, born in Chicago, Illinois. Their career spanned five decades … and there’s talk of a new set of Everlys comin’ outta that family before long!  (By the way, if you listen to Macca’s song, Let ‘Em In, you’ll hear him pay homage to “Phil and Don”)

SIMON AND GARFUNKEL narrowly beat out UK’s Chad and Jeremy in the international return, while they just squeaked by the Righteous Brothers here in the states.  While Paul and Art have gone their separate ways (due to a song Paul wanted them to record and press called Cuba Si, Nixon No. Art refused … and left the duo), their vocal styles (sometimes double-tracked or as in Scarborough Fair, multi) and Simon’s writing left an amazing imprint.
And while the Righteous Brothers could whip up some white-eyed soul better than anyone, the last recordings included a dynamite remake (actually an update) of Rock and Roll Heaven, which was a fitting tribute to the rock stars who passed away since the original recording.  Sadly, Bobby Hatfield would join those ranks shortly after …

VOTED THE WORST?? (now, before I report this, remember it was the readers who voted ‘em … so don’t take it out on me!) Of the 200-and-some votes sent in, over 90% said the worst duo of all-time was John and Yoko … followed by … Hall and Oates!! But, since it was my poll, I have the right to disagree on that one:
While Daryl (Hall) did sing most of “their” hits more as a frontman with a band (though John Oates did stick his face in often to let us know they were a “duo”), the two of them did a remarkable rendition of You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’, among others.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST (ie, HIDEOUS) was a duo who, on the “A” side of their 45, did a spot-on impersonation of the Righteous Brothers with Trouble With A Woman. The “B” side, however, was another story:  The “song” It’s Nice To Be Alive sucked worse than a broken Electrolux!!  And the lyrics?  Go figure:
“The way you look, the way you smell-mell-mell, the way you make me feel so well-well-well …”. Need I say more?

My faves were definitely The Everlys.  Today, I’d love to hear Beyoncé and Ludacris hook up again. Or how about coupling Stevie Nicks and Dolly Parton? Their tone, vibrato and lyrical expression are almost identical, though they have different dialects and genres.

But, who would you choose? Either leave a comment or email me and lemme know, okay? We can always run another poll!

Okay … that’s it for this edition. But stay tuned … there’s more in 24! But, before I leave, here’s the winning duo from the last poll, joining forces with (of all bands!) Liverpool’s Gerry and the Pacemakers:

Is “Sister” Still “Twisted”?

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

Okay, so the Christmas album was … well, a little … er, different?
But, now, Twisted Sister are talkin’ about turning their Christmas album into a stage show (yay!whoopee!hotdang!whatever …)

Actually, TS’s Jay Jay French says “We will be touring Europe and the U.S. playing ‘Stay Hungry’ start to finish and since ‘A Twisted Christmas’ was so successful we will be pursuing the ‘Twisted Christmas’ musical project.” But he included, “I urge fans to check with the Twisted Sister website for updates on all these projects and events.”

After followin’ the band since their “I Gotta Rock” debut, I … well, ya just kinda wonder what this tour’s gonna throw at us! With Snider’s no-holds-barred frame of mind, anything can happen …

TOTO, I THINK WE’RE IN KANSAS AGAIN!!

Just learned that the guitar-based rock of Kansas will be returning! Founding guitarist Kerry Livgren and former lead guitarist and (current Deep Purple picker) Steve Morse will be rejoining the band for a special 35th Anniversary gig.

They’ll be celebrating with a performance at White Concert Hall in Topeka, Kansas, with Livgren and Morse both being part of the night’s lineup.
Livgren was a co-founder and part of Kansas’ roster for the first thirteen years that the band was together. Morse played lead guitar on 1986’s Power and In the Spirit of Things from 1988.
The show will take place on February 9th and will be filmed for a DVD that will be entitled (appropriately) “There’s No Place Like Home”.

TWISTED SISTER: I GOTTA ROCK
Okay, yardbirds … here’s the song that took ‘em to the top:

Lennon and Hard Rock Hell

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Awright, awright … so I made one little mistake on the last post.

Or … did I??

Actually, thanks to a very sharp reader named Isabella, I was informed that Zep guitarist Jimmy Page’s manager has nixed any reunion of the super-group. Now, I’d drafted my post before the news came out, so (and knowing how this story’s taken more turns than a mountain road!) I shoulda checked for the latest.

Of course, if he changes his mind again, I’m right, right??

Anyway, I appreciate Isabella’s comments. Great to have readers like her around!

Now … on to today’s kaffeeklatsche:

Hey … remember that nonsense with a digitally-spliced-and-diced John Lennon pushing laptops? (suuuuuure … like John would think all the starving, diseased and dying kids of the world need a laptop to heal their painNO,HEWOULDN’T!) Yep … it was him (or his sound bytes), alright … and Yoko approved his voice/image use!

But now she’s on the right track by allowing the WHY organization to use his song, Give Peace A Chance, on the new CD comp, SERVE3. It’ll also include rare, new or previously unreleased tracks from some of music’s best artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Joss Stone, Avril Lavigne, Starsailor, My Morning Jacket and more. SERVE3 will be available at Hard Rock locations around the world and on Hard Rock.com, with digital downloads ready for ya at iTunes.com.

Here’s what Yoko said: “I am glad that WHY is using John’s lyrics to communicate the seriousness of this issue to the world. Let’s all work together to make a world without hunger as soon as humanly possible. We owe this battle to our children. WAR IS OVER if you want it. In brotherhood and sisterhood.”

Metallicats at Mersey Mercy

Saturday, January 10th, 2009

Okay … what’s up with the new dude who’s taken over this sacred site?
Well, it’s like this: I’ve been a rock raver, researcher and writer since … since … well, for a lonnnnng time (hmph … ain’t gonna get my age outta me …), and the site was available.
Sooooo, ya put 1 + 1 together, whaddya got?? Uh-huh …
But, now, you’re gonna get more insider info, updates, interviews and vids for yer money (eh? Oh … right … it’s free. Heh-heh …). So, with that in mind, let’s make happen:
Animations - blue zig-zags
Now, while I’m not gonna officially debut this rascal until 12 January, lemme give ya a taste of the new stuff (careful … don’t “chug” it! It has kinduva kick to it …):
Now, one thing ya gotta know is that, while I’m at the mercy of the Mersey Beat, I’m also one devoted Metallicat! And if ya haven’t caught Hetfield and Co.’s new CD, Death Magnetic, you’re missin’ one of the greatest CD’s ever to appear on terra firma in 2008! Not only is it hard-rockin’ metal at its best (and nobody … but nobody … can growl like James! Only one who could’ve matched him was the late Mike Smith), but it’s got some dynamite tracks that’ll have you playin’ that CD again and again ’til it’s warped!
Oh … by the way: DIDJA HEAR where Lars (Ulrich. The drummer! Are you really a rock fan??) has offered to put his sticks to use with Deep Purple MIV? They’ve got everybody in the band but Ian (yep … even Richie Blackmore has agreed), but he’s still doin’ the new version of DP. So, since they’re in need of a new skin-pounder, along comes Lars offerin’ his services for a one-shot deal, if nothing else. Stay tuned for more on this story …

LED ZEP TO TOUR … AND DISC!
Yep … the Band that Made Rock Famous (post-Beatles, pre-Fore) is gettin’ it back together to tour and record once again …
ummm … without Robert Plant!
Seems the legendary frontman for Led Zeppelin thinks he’s too “old” to rock now, so he’ll be sittin’ out the lineup this time! That means Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and (in honour of his dad, original LZ’er, Bonzo) Jason Bonham are lookin’ for a replacement for Plant!
More news? Gotcha: They might not even call themselves “Led Zeppelin” anymore (SACRILEGE!!!!!) and go with a new moniker instead.
Whatever the case, watch this space for more on the LZ race back to the stage (and, undoubtedly, charts) …

And there ya have it: Guess I sorta/kinda debuted it anyway, huh? Well, there’s gonna be more in 24, so stay tuned, okay?
And I’ll see ya on the flip side!
